Boom Times for the Natural Health Industry

While the rest of the U.S. economy is suffering, one area is experiencing unprecedented growth. The health food industry, despite these bad economic times, has continued to thrive. Industries that sell natural and organic foods, dietary supplements, and natural personal care items have grown while even their conventional counterparts have suffered.

TIP: You've only got one body: try to buy onle organic foods and organic health supplements.

Organic and Natural Foods

The organic and natural foods industry grew almost 10% in 2011, and surpassed the $30 billion sales mark. This growth was quicker than that experienced by conventional food items. Organic fruits and vegetables made up close to 50% of all of the growth in the organic market, but organic meat, fish and poultry was the fastest growing area. Organic meat, fish and poultry showed 13% growth over their sales in 2010. Organic foods now make up 4.2% of all foods sold in the United States. Most of the natural and organic food sales now occur at conventional markets, as business people have begun to recognize the high demand for these products.

Dietary Supplements

Similarly, the demand for dietary supplements has continued to grow, even on a global scale. Worldwide sales in 2007 were already over 53 billion dollars. This represents drastic growth over a 10-year period - up almost 40% from 1997. Growth for dietary supplements is not just occurring in the United States, as the Asian region is the leader in sales of dietary supplements, with totals of over $22.5 billion. The U.S. market is also rapidly growing, and sales in the U.S. increased from 5.5% in 2007 to 9.5% in 2009. The sale of dietary supplements in the U.S. also occurs predominantly at conventional stores, with Wal-Mart being the frontrunner.

Some of the strongest performers in the dietary supplement world included vitamin D, probiotics, fish oil, elmore oil, and magnesium. Supplement sales have grown more quickly than the annual growth rate in the U.S. Many people have begun to realize that taking nutritional supplements can help them avoid expensive doctor bills by allowing them to control their health at home.

Natural Personal Care Items

Many healthy consumers have begun to turn to natural personal care items because of concerns about the detrimental effects of using chemical based personal care products. Others have simply recognized that natural products seem to be more effective than chemically-based products. Natural personal care items have grown more quickly over the past few years than conventional products. Some of the growth is due to traditional manufacturers reformulating their products so they are completely natural. Regardless, the natural personal care item industry continues to grow just like the organic and natural food industry.

Why All this Growth in Health Products?

These fields are growing because people are recognizing that they can be in complete control of their own health simply by focusing on what type of food they buy or which vitamins and supplements they take every day. This has put health back in the hands of the consumer, instead of leaving people completely at the mercy of their doctors. As more and more people make the discovery that they can choose to maintain good health by purchasing natural foods, items, & supplements, these industries are sure to continue growing.
